One of the movies that I saw at Comic-con was King of Kong. Walking in, I wasn't sure if this was based on real or imaginary events. It's real. The documentary focuses on two players vying for the top score in Donkey Kong. While I have little interest in classic arcade games, I thought that the dynamic between the players was compelling and by the end, I felt very invested in who would emerge the victor. It's a great story about competition and there are absolutely quirky and fascinating characters here. It was a movie that M dragged me into but after seeing it, I would recommend it.
We had a special treat for our viewing. Some of the people in the movie were present at the theater for a Q&A after the screening, including one of the main players. The director and producer were also present to talk about why they started the project, how they got access to everyone, and about various lucky breaks. Mr. Awesome was also there, and he's quite the character.
And best of all, the story continues. Just before Comic-con a new Donkey Kong record was set.
