cake or cupcake?

Haha, it's fate! You must continue to bake!
:) It's fate (maybe) but I also have new year resolutions. I'm trying to eat more healthy. At least the non-dessert stuff I've been making hasn't been too bad....

You know since I became allergic to wheat I've been using Glutino, who has all kinds of baking products with no wheat. Much healthier ingredients, but beleive it or not way more calories. But much better for my digestion, anyway.

I used to live with a guy from India who made the best dahl with curry. Homemade, like nothing I've ever had. Extra spicy. I miss that so much. Good to find another spice lover!! ;)

That's interesting that the gluten-free version is healthier but has more calories. I wonder why. If you don't mind my asking, how were you diagnosed with the allergy?

In college, one of my friends was a little amazed at how many spices I would use in a dish because she was used to her mother's cooking, and her mother only used salt and pepper in her cooking. I used to choke my dishes with spices although now I'm trying to take a more restrained approach and use just the right blend and right amount of spices. Restraint is so hard at times though. :)

I'm thinking about exploring Moroccan and African style dishes and I think the spice combinations will be interesting for those.

Ooh, Moroccan sounds soooo good. I'm really intrigued by that whole culture. Loreena McKennit wrote a song when she visited there and I started reading about the music get-togethers they have. So interesting.

I was really sick for 4 years (sounds surprising but I read that it takes an average of 9 years for most people to be diagnosed) we were on vacation and I had fetuccini alfredo and a month later it felt like it was still sitting in my stomach. I couldn't even drink water without getting ill. To keep it simple, I had all the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Scary. I was also severely anemic.

After years of visiting my doctor he finally did an ultrasound and gave me a blood test. I was negative for a gluten allergy but positive for the wheat allergy so whenever I eat wheat my immune system attacks my digestive system and I can't absorb nutrients. Anyway I felt like a million bucks as soon as I had been off wheat for a few months.

At some point I found out that spices are addictive - it makes sense because I remember I couldn't get enough of them, I was even eating curried rice for breakfast! But then again I'm a bit crazy anyway. ;)

I can't wait to hear about your African and Moroccan dishes!!

I tried one couscous dish that was quite good and which made me start thinking about dishes from Morocco, Tunisia, North Africa - cuisines that I've never really explored before. It's called Seven Vegetable Couscous with Chunky Onion Harissa. The recipe is easy to follow, makes a ton of food, and tastes very good. I used Israeli couscous and chickpeas rather than lima beans, and it turned out very well.

Wow. That's a long time to get diagnosed but I'm glad that they did in the end. I've been really fatigued for the past several weeks and wondered if it might be due to some changes in my diet or perhaps something environmental - but I think it might just be more work stress and not enough exercise and sleep. Thank you for sharing your story.

Anyway, I hope to be trying out some Moroccan dishes soon. I ordered a book from Amazon and it had a lot of recipes that I'm excited to try out.
